![]() ![]() He went fi rst to Paris, then to Pola (Croatia) and finally to Trieste. ![]() Frustrated for personal reasons and disappointed by the social and political situation of his country, Joyce left Ireland (committing himself to a life of self-imposed exile). Then, he studied modern languages at University College Dublin (UCD), where he graduated. Regarding Joyce’s education: he attended two Jesuits schools. After Parnell’s death (1891), Joyce’s father retired from politics and social life. This event symbolised the failure of his country’s hopes and displayed the incapacity of Ireland to get free from Britain’s domination. Parnell convinced Prime Minister Gladstone to present the Irish Home Rule Bill in the Houses of Parliament (1886), but it was twice rejected.
