![]() They also cannot help wondering if they will ever see the rest of their family again. It is hard going for they have little resources and the Americans are hostile to them. Angelique, her mother, and her younger sisters and brothers end up in Maryland where they must try to build a life for themselves. What follows is a nightmare of a journey south to America. Finally the families are rounded up, herded onto ships, and banished from the land that is their home. Then the Acadians are told that they may not use weapons or boats and therefore cannot hunt and fish. First many of the men, including Angelique's father, are imprisoned. Angelique's father works with his neighbors to try to mollify the English authorities but to no avail. The English decide that they are going to make life as difficult and as uncomfortable as they can for the Acadians. Then things start to happen which make these minor annoyances seem insignificant. ![]() Angelique also wishes that she got on better with her mother who always seems to find fault with her and her work. Of course Angelique complains about her annoying little sister - whom she calls "Sausage"- and the twins are truly a pair of holy terrors, leaving mayhem and chaos in their wake. ![]() It is a beautiful place and she and her family have a good life.
